Provision of Emergency Shelter and Hygiene Promotion for Conflict-Affected Populations in IDP Campsin Balcad District, Somalia

Project Overview

KARDO AID, with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) through the Rapid Support Mechanism (RSM), implemented an emergency response project in Balcad District, Middle Shabelle Region, to support conflict- and flood-affected internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The intervention was implemented between July 1 and July 30, 2025, targeting vulnerable households residing in Gargaar 1, Gargaar 2, Daryeel, and Allaamin IDP camps. The project aimed to provide immediate, life-saving, and dignified access to emergency shelter materials and hygiene services while reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and improving living conditions for displaced families.

Key Activities

  • Conducted rapid needs assessments and beneficiary verification in collaboration with local
  • authorities and community leaders.
  • Registered and selected 500 vulnerable households based on humanitarian vulnerability criteria.
  • Distributed 500 hygiene kits containing Aquatabs, soap, jerrycans, buckets, and menstrual
  • hygiene materials.
  • Distributed 500 emergency shelter kits consisting of plastic sheets and ropes.
  • Conducted hygiene promotion sessions on safe water handling, handwashing, sanitation,
  • menstrual hygiene management, and disease prevention.
  • Organized community sensitization meetings and awareness campaigns.
  • Established complaints and feedback mechanisms, including toll-free hotline services.
  • Conducted monitoring visits, focus group discussions, and beneficiary feedback sessions.
  • Prioritized vulnerable groups, including female-headed households, elderly persons, and people with disabilities during distributions.

Results and Achievements

  • Successfully reached 500 vulnerable households, benefiting approximately 3,000 individuals.
  • Distributed 500 hygiene kits to targeted households.
  • Distributed 500 emergency shelter kits, including plastic sheets and ropes.
  • Reached all beneficiary households with hygiene promotion and awareness messages.
  • Improved knowledge of handwashing, safe water storage, menstrual hygiene, and sanitation practices.
  • Achieved 100% completion of planned project targets within one month.
  • Ensured inclusive and dignified distributions through gender-sensitive approaches and protection measures.
